Tom Cruise Can't Save 'Digger' From Being An Unpleasant Experience

For years people have wished Tom Cruise would jettison his action hero persona that he's adopted over the last two decades or so and try to challenge himself again as an actor. Be careful what you wish for. Then again, I can't imagine yet another "meta commentary on the career of Tom Cruise" is what people meant by "challenge." It's become boring that Cruise is so attracted to stories where he can convey to an audience what it's like to be Tom Cruise.

It was kind of funny when he did this in Rock of Ages, a movie I both can't believe exists and still question if it actually does exist anymore. (If someone told me all copies of Rock of Ages have been deleted I wouldn't entirely dismiss the possibility.) I enjoyed this when he did it to perfection in Top Gun: Maverick. But now comes the unpleasant and baffling Digger, a movie even the studio doesn't seem to want you to know what it's actually about. Remember, Digger's first trailer started with a two and a half minute retrospective on Tom Cruise's career. (Every movie should do this now. The next Street Fighter trailer should devote two and a half minutes to celebrating the career of Noah Centineo.)
