Here's A Story l Was Told About Tom Cruise, Which Is My Favorite Tom Cruise Story

Last June, my girlfriend Kate and I were at a premiere party for a movie you probably don't know, but it was directed by and starred a famous person who has a lot of famous friends and they were all there. At one point, Kate pointed at a booth and said, "I think he's with Rolling Stone," which I slightly misheard because it was very loud. When I looked over, I expected to see film critic David Fear or someone else who worked at the magazine, but it was Keith Richards.

Now here's the thing with parties like this, they aren't very fun unless you actually know someone else there. We couldn't actually hang out with Keith Richards. Usually at a parties like this, the appeal is running into people we actually know, plus free food and booze. We didn't know anybody. And the line at the bar was very long and crowded. Kate was there for an actual work reason, but once that was over, our plan was to get out of there. Then something miraculous happened ... all the famous people left. Which means most of the scenesters left. The party was officially dead. It's at this point we decide to stay. Because now we had all the free food and booze we want with no line or crowd. This is ideal.

About an hour later, a famous actor strolled in, who apparently did not get the memo that all the other famous actors would long be gone by now and seemed surprised as he was immediately mobbed by the few scenesters who remained. Kate says, "You should tell him about your Tom Cruise tweet." Now, what this means is, a few weeks before, I had tweeted a picture of Tom Cruise eating popcorn, talking to the concessions staff at the AMC Lincoln Square during the Mission: Impossible–Final Reckoning premiere. I do not know this actor and this actor does not follow me on social media, but somehow he saw this tweet and he retweeted it by saying something along the lines of, ”this is what Tom Cruise always does." After that, my tweet went legitimately viral. As of right now, it has 38 million views.¹

¹My favorite reply to that tweet was someone saying, "Nobody cares, bro" ... to a tweet with 38 million views.

I then reminded Kate she has a legitimate work-related reason to talk to this actor, which would be much less embarrassing than trying to open a conversation about a tweet. This is what we did and this actor did seem actually relieved to discuss this work-related topic than continue to listen to scenesters tell him how much they love his movies.

After a few minutes, I did tell him about the tweet and he responded, "Oh, that was you?!" He smiled, then said, "Hey, do you guys want to hear a Tom Cruise story?" I said, "Yes, we do."
