The Gleeful Reaction To 'Supergirl' Failing Has Been Weird
Warner Bros.

Supergirl is, at times, unpleasant. And I expected a polarizing reaction, which I mentioned in my review, imagining parents taking their young daughter to a movie about sex trafficking and a protagonist on a murderous revenge tour. Not exactly a "feel good" offering. But I admire its audacity. I'd take Supergirl – an honest attempt to make an interesting movie – over the soullessness of something like The Mandalorian and Grogu, which feels like it was created in a lab to be as inoffensive and sterile as humanly possible. The Mandalorian and Grogu feels like a cynical reason to make a movie, as opposed to Supergirl, which is a cynical movie. I, personally, will always take the latter.

Or even compared to last summer's The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Over the course of a full movie I felt nothing the whole time. It was like eating a rice cake. I truly understand being repulsed by Supergirl, but at least it's an emotion.

So no, it doesn't surprise me that Supergirl was met with a polarizing reaction. Or that it's not making any money. I just checked and it's sitting at 56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and I'm kinda shocked it's only four points off from a "fresh" score. I honestly assumed it was lower. Now, what is surprising to me are the people who are happy about this. Here's a little history...
